Ahmedabad, March 8: In a thrilling display of talent, Abhishek Sharma answered his critics with a stunning half-century in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. Prior to the match, Sharma had managed only 89 runs in seven innings, raising questions about his form.
From the outset, Sharma looked in excellent rhythm, capitalizing on an early life to unleash a barrage of boundaries. The left-handed batsman reached his half-century in just 18 balls, finishing his explosive innings with 52 runs off 21 balls, including six fours and three sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 247.
Teaming up with Sanju Samson, Sharma provided India with a fiery start, as the duo propelled the team’s score past 50 runs in just four overs. They became the first opening pair in T20 World Cup history to achieve a 50-run partnership in the final. Additionally, India set a record for the most runs scored in the powerplay of a T20 World Cup match, amassing 92 runs during this phase.
The Indian team also made history by completing 100 runs in just 7.2 overs, marking the fastest century in T20 World Cup knockout matches. This record was previously held by New Zealand, who reached 100 runs in 7.5 overs during their semifinal against South Africa.
In the final, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first. India retained their playing XI, while New Zealand made one change, bringing in Jacob Duffy for Cole McConchie.
