Kolkata, 16 November (Udaipur Kiran). South Africa clinched a tense, low-scoring Test at Eden Gardens by 30 runs to take a 1–0 lead in the two-match series. The second Test will be played in Guwahati from 22 November.

Chasing just 124 for victory in the fourth innings, India collapsed for 93. Captain Shubman Gill, out with a neck injury, did not come out to bat, forcing a reshuffled top order.
Earlier, South Africa were bowled out for 159 in their first innings after winning the toss. Aiden Markram top-scored with 31, while Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi contributed 24 each. Jasprit Bumrah starred with five wickets, while Mohammad Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two apiece.
India replied with 189, gaining a slim 30-run lead. KL Rahul made 39, Washington Sundar 29. For South Africa, Simon Harmer took four wickets and Marco Jansen three.
In the second innings, captain Temba Bavuma held the innings together with an unbeaten 55 off 136 balls. However, he received little support from the other end. Ravindra Jadeja picked up four wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammad Siraj took two each.
Set a modest target, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck and KL Rahul for 1 inside three overs. Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel added 32 for the third wicket, but once that partnership broke, the slide resumed. Axar Patel’s quick 26 off 17 balls, including two sixes and a four, briefly lifted hopes but wasn’t enough.
For South Africa, Harmer again led the attack with four wickets, while Jansen and Keshav Maharaj took two each. Aiden Markram chipped in with one.
