Guwahati, May 20 – Continuous overnight rainfall has led to widespread waterlogging across several parts of Guwahati, severely disrupting daily life for residents. The downpour began late Sunday night and intensified through the early hours of Monday, submerging key roads and low-lying areas under knee-deep water.

Major Areas Affected
Localities such as GS Road, Rukminigaon, Zoo Road, Tarun Nagar, Navin Nagar, Chandmari, Pandu, Jalukbari, Hatigaon, Noonmati, Chenikuthi, Beltola, and Survey have reported significant water accumulation. Traffic movement has slowed to a crawl in many places, with residents and commuters struggling to navigate submerged streets.
The worst-hit areas are low-lying zones that habitually suffer from drainage bottlenecks during heavy rains.
Civic Teams Struggle Amid Continuous Rain
Teams from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the city’s drainage department have been deployed to tackle the situation. However, persistent rainfall is hampering relief efforts, delaying water evacuation and restoration of normalcy.
Authorities are working round-the-clock to clear clogged drains and improve the flow of stormwater, but given the intensity of rainfall and the city’s existing infrastructure issues, immediate relief has been limited.
Residents Voice Long-Standing Concerns
Local residents have expressed frustration over what they describe as a yearly crisis. “Every monsoon brings the same story. Despite promises and temporary measures, no long-term drainage solution has been implemented,” said a resident of Zoo Road.
Complaints regarding poor urban planning and lack of pre-monsoon preparation have also resurfaced, with several citizens calling for urgent intervention by the state government.
Administration Urges Caution
In light of the situation, the district administration has issued an advisory urging people to avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors where possible. Emergency response teams are on alert to deal with any unforeseen incidents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall in Guwahati and surrounding areas over the next 24 hours, raising the possibility of further flooding and disruption.
