Digital Illusions and Parasocial Bonds Challenge Real Relationships

Author: Bhagwan Prasad Gaur, Udaipur

In earlier times, relationships were understood through the language of the eyes; today, they are shaped by the glow of screens. The very technology that connected humanity to the world has now begun to distance people from their loved ones. The internet, social media, and artificial intelligence (AI) have made life convenient, but amidst this convenience, society has entered an era of digital illusions where virtual closeness replaces genuine relationships. This virtual closeness is known as parasocial relationships, which are increasingly becoming a key factor in expanding false hopes.

Over five billion people worldwide are now connected to social media in some form. This number not only reflects technological growth but signals a social transformation. Children, youth, and elders alike are swept in this digital flow. The issue lies not with technology itself but with its indiscriminate use. The desire for quick results, instant happiness, and easy solutions has led many to treat AI and social media as guides, advisors, and even emotional support.

Parasocial relationships are essentially one-sided. A person becomes emotionally attached to a YouTuber, social media influencer, online speaker, digital platform, or AI chatbot, while the other side often does not know them personally. Gradually, this emotional attachment turns into trust, and when this trust exceeds reason, individuals become vulnerable to deceptive claims and poor decisions.

Today, incidents of spreading confusion through fake videos, deepfake technology, false pamphlets, doctored images, and emotional stories are surfacing. Videos are created using one person’s face and another’s voice. Claims promising to double money, cure diseases, arrange marriages, secure jobs, or provide instant solutions to life’s problems mislead many.

The rising form of fraud is no longer just a crime but a well-organized and technologically advanced activity. Daily, numerous people suffer economic or mental harm under the influence of false emotions and virtual relationships. Some lose their lifelong earnings, while others break down internally. Due to social hesitation and fear, many victims cannot share their experiences.

The sad truth is that today, truth appears quiet while falsehood seems more attractive. Lies are presented with emotional language, sweet music, and technological sparkle. Relationships seen through a mirror are often hollow inside and sometimes seem more impactful than real ones.

The most serious consequence of digital illusions is the weakening of human relationships. Marriages, parents, siblings, children, elders, and friends are experiencing reduced communication and sensitivity. People living under the same roof feel less connected to each other and more to their screens.

If this trend continues, the erosion of sensitivity in society is inevitable. Human connections will gradually diminish with people and increase with machines, signaling a warning for social balance.

This is not merely an individual problem but a broad social challenge. It is essential to increase vigilance regarding misleading information, deepfakes, and emotional claims spreading on digital platforms. Effective enforcement of laws, technological understanding, and awareness are all crucial.

Public awareness is the greatest need of the hour. Through schools, colleges, local councils, and social forums, it is necessary to develop an understanding that not every attractive message is true. Digital literacy is as important today as general education.

The new year is not just a change in date but an opportunity for introspection and setting new directions. In this new year, we must resolve to:

1. Use technology with discretion and balance.
2. Verify every digital message and claim before accepting it.
3. Devote time, communication, and respect to our real relationships.
4. Nurture children to be emotionally strong, discerning, and vigilant in favor of truth.

Technology is meant to serve humanity, not to leave humanity behind. This understanding and awareness can lead us toward a balanced, safe, and sensitive society. The new year will truly be new only when we renew the way we think, understand, and live.
