Berlin, October 29 (Udaipur Kiran) — Borussia Dortmund advanced to the Round of 16 of the DFB Cup after defeating Eintracht Frankfurt in a thrilling penalty shootout on Tuesday. The match ended 1-1 in regulation time, before Dortmund sealed victory 4-2 on penalties.

Frankfurt made a strong start, taking the lead in the 7th minute when Ansgar Knauff, a former Dortmund winger, converted Mario Götze’s throw ball to put the hosts ahead. The early goal put Dortmund under pressure as Frankfurt maintained possession and created several attacking chances, but Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made key saves to deny Fares Chaibi and Ritsu Doan before halftime.
Dortmund came out stronger in the second half and equalised just three minutes after the restart (48th minute). Julian Brandt found the net from Julian Ryerson’s low cross from the right, levelling the score at 1-1.
With no winner in regular time, the game went into penalties. Dortmund’s Brandt, Bayer, Sabitzer, and Ryerson successfully converted their spot kicks, while Doan’s shot went over the crossbar and Kobel saved Chaibi’s attempt, sealing a 4-2 shootout win for Dortmund.
The victory ensured Dortmund’s place in the pre-quarterfinals, extending their unbeaten run across competitions.
Frankfurt, who showed disciplined defensive play throughout the match, will now host Heidenheim in their next Bundesliga fixture next week, while Dortmund will travel to Augsburg on Friday.
Reacting to the hard-fought win, Dortmund manager Kovac said, “It had to come down to penalties because both sides gave everything. Frankfurt made it very difficult for us, but in the end, luck was slightly on our side — and we’re happy to advance.”
