Ujjain, February 15: The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is witnessing a massive influx of devotees on the occasion of Mahashivratri. Long queues have formed since the night, as temple authorities strive to facilitate smooth darshan for the visitors. It is estimated that over one million devotees are expected to visit the temple during this auspicious occasion.
The deity, Baba Mahakal, has been adorned in a unique manner today, featuring a trident and a moon placed on his forehead. According to the temple priests, this special decoration is performed only once a year.
A priest at the temple stated, “The celebrations for Shiv Navratri and Mahashivratri are being conducted with great reverence in the courtyard of Baba Mahakal. The temple will remain open for 44 continuous hours for devotees, and a grand bhasma aarti has been performed. Devotees can offer milk, yogurt, and water to Baba today, and the temple doors will remain open throughout the day with special rituals being conducted.”
He further mentioned that devotees have traveled from far and wide to seek blessings from Baba, and arrangements have been made to ensure their safety while they wait in line for darshan. The crowd at the temple is significantly larger than on regular days, with many devotees lining up since the night.
Regarding the special rituals for Baba today, the priest added, “A special Panchamrit abhishek has been performed using milk, yogurt, and Ganga water, along with a bath in fruit juices. Baba has been adorned with bhang, and a crown resembling a sehra has been placed on his forehead, along with the trident, moon, and sun. These symbols represent that everything belongs to him, day and night. Following this, the abhishek of Baba will take place in the evening, continuing until the next morning, with nature being offered to Baba. The bhasma aarti on February 16 will be held at 12 PM, an event that occurs only once a year.”
According to temple administration, over one million devotees are expected to visit the temple on February 15 and 16. Security measures have been tightened, with arrangements made for medical assistance and streamlined darshan for the devotees. Traffic has also been diverted, and police presence has been increased both inside and outside the temple premises.
