New Delhi, September 4 (Udaipur Kiran) : Shia cleric Maulana Syed Mohsin Takvi has voiced strong opposition to the Jauhar tradition, urging a critical examination of such customs. He emphasized that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) should be uniformly applicable to all communities in India.
In a recent discussion regarding actress Swara Bhasker’s comments on Jauhar, Takvi stated that from an Islamic perspective, the tradition is not viewed positively. He stressed that individuals should confront challenges with courage and resilience, questioning the relevance of Jauhar in contemporary India. “Where is this practice happening today?” he asked, highlighting the current socio-political climate where the rights of Muslims are often suppressed.
Takvi pointed out that Muslims constitute a small percentage of India’s population and questioned the focus on Jauhar when broader issues of rights and representation are at stake. He dismissed the notion that Jauhar is a pressing concern, labeling it as a misunderstanding.
On the recent decision by the Uttarakhand Waqf Board to remove provisions for multiple marriages from marriage contracts, Takvi remarked that monogamy is the norm across all religions in India. He argued that if laws are to be enacted, they must be applicable to everyone equally. He criticized the selective enforcement of the UCC against Muslims, stating that such actions contradict the very principles of the UCC.
While acknowledging that Islam permits second marriages under specific conditions, he clarified that it is not mandatory and should be approached with equity and fairness. Takvi questioned the efficacy of implementing the UCC, suggesting that it distracts from more pressing national issues. He urged a focus on resolving significant problems rather than pursuing divisive legislation.
