Leh, August 23 (Udaipur Kiran): A bus skidded off the road and plunged 200 feet into a gorge in Leh district of Ladakh on Thursday, killing seven people and injuring 20 others.
Leh Deputy Commissioner Santosh Sukhadeve said the bus was carrying school staff to a wedding when it went out of the driver’s control near Durbuk and fell into a deep gorge. The army said seven people were killed and 20 others, including three children and 17 women, were injured in the accident.
In a statement, the army said that Indian Army personnel stationed near Durbuk in Ladakh provided significant assistance in a swift and compassionate response following a tragic accident involving a civilian school bus this morning around 11 am. The army said that there were 27 passengers on the bus and it fell into the gorge after the driver lost control. The army said its troops in the area immediately reached the accident site and started evacuating the victims.
The army said that the soldiers immediately evacuated all 27 injured to the nearest medical facilities. The injured were initially taken to the Tangste Military Hospital and Primary Health Centre, where they were provided immediate medical care. The army said that its Advanced Light Helicopters and Cheetah helicopters made 14 sorties to evacuate the injured to Leh Military Hospital. The army said that after initial examination and treatment, 20 injured were shifted to the Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital in Leh.
The army said that a person suffering from a spinal injury has been retained at Leh Military Hospital for further treatment.
