Research on GIS Role in Tourism Development Published in Peer-Reviewed Journal

Banswara, February 19, 2025: Banswara, a land of natural beauty and architectural grandeur, is set to witness a major boost in tourism with the development of a GIS-based mobile application. A groundbreaking research study on the role of Web GIS in Banswara’s tourism sector has been published in a renowned peer-reviewed journal, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in Rajasthan’s tourism research.

As a result, tourists visiting Banswara will soon be able to access detailed information about tourist destinations through an Android app on their mobile phones.

A Collaborative Effort to Revolutionize Tourism

This Web Map Application has been developed using GIS technology by Viranch Dave, a PhD researcher at the Department of Geography, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, Gujarat, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Mudit Mankad. The research was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Kamlesh Sharma, Additional Director, Information & Public Relations Department, Rajasthan.

Speaking about the project, Viranch Dave highlighted that Banswara has immense potential for tourism development, and information technology can play a crucial role in promoting it. Over a span of two years, researchers from Maharaja Sayajirao University explored thematic-based new tourism circuits in the region and developed a GIS-backed tourism application to enhance accessibility and visibility.

GIS Technology: A Game-Changer for Banswara Tourism

Banswara’s tourism circuits were identified using GIS technology, an initiative led by Viranch Dave, a talented Nagarwada-based researcher. This research was sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, a premier institute under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, which oversees social science research across the country.

According to the study, Banswara boasts a diverse range of cultural, religious, historical, and nature-based attractions that can appeal to different types of tourists.

Using GIS technology, maps were created to showcase Banswara’s major tourist destinations and their connectivity. The study aims to inspire further research in tourism development and strategic planning for Banswara.

This project was also supported by Prof. Mudit Mankad and Prof. Ami Rawal from MS University, Vadodara.

Global Recognition: Research Published in an International Journal

This pioneering research has been published in the internationally acclaimed journal, ‘Journal of Tourism Insights’, and is now freely accessible online. This provides global exposure to Banswara’s tourism potential and paves the way for future studies and development strategies.
