Apple will be holding a special event next week. At the event, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to unveil new products to expand its portfolio. At this event, the company is expected to unveil the new iPhone 15 and Apple Watch models.
Previously, there were rumors that Apple could replace the iPhone’s leather case with a new case made of a different material. Bloomberg’s Mark Garmin reports that the company is also planning to ditch the existing leather straps for the Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch leather band may no longer be manufactured
Apple is also reportedly “leaning out of leather on Apple Watch straps.” The move could also end Apple’s partnership with Hermès, which began in 2015.
According to the report, Apple is offering employees up to 90 percent off Hermes leather watch straps. When Apple gives its employees a big discount on a product, it’s usually a sign that the product may be discontinued soon. The company did the same with the original HomePod before ceasing sales in 2021.
Some official Apple Watch leather straps, including modern buckles and Hermès models, are available on the company’s website. The classic link bracelet introduced with the original Apple Watch is also no longer available on the site.
A similar rumor circulated around the internet last year that Apple was removing the Hermès Apple Watch straps. Apple usually introduces new colors for Apple Watch straps with the launch of new generations of its products. However, the company is likely to make more radical changes to its accessories this year.
Why is Apple giving up leather goods?
The report notes that Apple may be ditching leather products for environmental reasons. Leather has a relatively high carbon footprint. As Apple advertises itself as an eco-friendly company, the company may stop making leather accessories.
Belts and bags made of leather are very popular among consumers because of their high quality. The company can also introduce leatherette accessories. However, the company appears to be considering other alternatives.
There are already rumors about Apple’s new “FineWoven” cases for the iPhone 15. We assume that these new cases are made of soft fabric in combination with normal silicone. More details on the new case will be revealed at the unveiling ceremony.
