New York : Amid a row with Canada over the killing of a Khalistani terrorist, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said governments must talk to each other to resolve the issue.
“When you have differences, governments must talk to each other. That’s how you resolve them. That’s how you build trust. That’s how you create an atmosphere where people can live in peace and harmony,” Jaishankar said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
He was responding to a question on the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist, in Canada in June. India has accused Canada of harbouring and supporting Khalistani terrorists.
“We have shared information with Canada on the Nijjar case. We have asked for a credible and transparent investigation. We have asked for action against those who are responsible for this heinous crime,” Jaishankar said.
He said that India and Canada have a long-standing relationship and that the two countries have cooperated on many issues.
“We want to continue to work with Canada in a constructive manner. But we also want to be very clear that we will not tolerate terrorism or support for terrorism,” Jaishankar said.
The row between India and Canada escalated in August when the Canadian government issued a travel advisory to its citizens, warning them of a “potential increased risk of arbitrary detention” in India. India rejected the advisory as “baseless and unfounded”.
The two countries have been engaged in a diplomatic standoff since then.
