World Sparrow Day Marked at Fatehsagar

Udaipur, March 20, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran): An awareness programme was organised at Fateh Sagar Lake by Green People Committee to mark World Sparrow Day, with a focus on sparrow conservation and environmental awareness.

World Sparrow Day

Observed every year on March 20, the day highlights the declining population of sparrows and the loss of their natural habitats. During the event, citizens were sensitised to the importance of protecting this small bird, which is considered an integral part of culture and the ecosystem.

Speakers pointed out that rapid urbanisation, increasing concrete structures and radiation from mobile towers have contributed to a steady decline in sparrow numbers, impacting biodiversity. However, recent conservation efforts have shown positive signs, with sparrows gradually returning to urban spaces.

The programme was organised jointly with WWF, the Forest Department, Charbhuja Seva Sansthan and Ratnamani Metals & Tubes. More than 400 nest boxes were distributed free of cost to the public.

During the event, Hitesh Jaiswal demonstrated different types of bird nests and encouraged people to provide safe shelter, food and water for birds. Around 200 awareness badges were also distributed with the support of Charbhuja Seva Sansthan.

Green People Committee president Rahul Bhatnagar urged citizens to place water pots on rooftops and provide grains for sparrows during the summer season. Chief guest Yadvendra Singh emphasised reducing pesticide use and increasing greenery, stating that sparrow conservation is a collective responsibility.

Several dignitaries, including Vikram Singh, S.N. Dave, Suhail Majboor, Dr. Lalit Joshi, Dr. Satish Sharma, Pratap Singh, Sharad Srivastava, V.S. Rana, Yaseen Pathan, Ismail Ali Durga, Pushpa Khamesra and Vinay Dave, were present on the occasion.
