Microsoft launched AI-powered PCs earlier this year, and AI-powered PC shipments are expected to increase 127% in the second quarter of 2024. But Apple is still a leader in this space, using M-series chips in its Mac lineup. According to Canalys, Apple has a 60 percent market share powered by Neural Engine, followed by Windows at 39 percent and ChromeOS at 1 percent.
The research firm says Apple Intelligence’s announcement makes AI use cases for the Mac clearer. The AI feature is in developer beta in the US, but upon release it will be compatible with a large portion of the existing Mac install base, allowing Apple to quickly expand the AI experience for users.

Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys, said: “The key benefit of AI-powered PCs for PC installers is to accelerate the growth of premium products.”
Performance from Lenovo, HP, Dell etc
Lenovo saw 228% sequential growth in AI-powered PC shipments with the launch of the Omnibook. Dell launched Copilot+ PCs in its XPS, Latitude and Inspiron lines, but due to sloppy launches, the AI-powered PCs only accounted for less than 7 percent of Windows shipments.
“With a strong base, AI-enabled PC shipments will gain momentum in the second half of 2024,” Dutt added. We intend to appeal to a broader customer base.”
8.8 million AI-enabled PCs were shipped in the second quarter of 2024
According to Canalys, 8.8 million AI-enabled PCs were sold in the second quarter of 2024. Shipments of AI-enabled PCs accounted for 14% of all PC shipments in the quarter, indicating that device availability will increase significantly. It is expected to be presented to end users in the second half of 2024.
“The market performance for AI-enabled PCs is broadly in line with expectations, with the industry still on track to ship approximately 44 million units in 2024 and 103 million units in 2025,” Dutt added, according to Canalys forecasts added.
“Q2 2024 saw a significant acceleration in the adoption of AI-enabled PCs,” Dutt added.
