Chennai, September 17 (Udaipur Kiran) : The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is gearing up for a competitive showdown as the by-elections for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly seats approach. The nomination process has revealed a five-cornered contest, with candidates from the ruling TVK, DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi, and various leftist parties cleared to run.
The Madurantakam (SC) seat is located in Chengalpattu district, while the Dharapuram (SC) seat is situated in Tiruppur district. Major political parties have opted to field separate candidates, intensifying the electoral battle.
The deadline for filing nominations closed on Wednesday at 3 PM, with a total of 99 nomination papers submitted, including those from official candidates, independents, and alternative contenders. Election officials conducted a thorough examination of these papers on Thursday to ensure compliance with legal and mandatory requirements.
In Madurantakam, the accepted candidates include TVK’s Maragatham Kumaravel, DMK’s Paranthaman, AIADMK’s Kanitha Sampath, Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Janakiraman, and CPI(M) candidate Suganti. Out of the 48 nominations filed, 32 were accepted while 16 were rejected due to non-compliance with essential criteria.
Similarly, in Dharapuram, the valid nominations include TVK’s Satyabama, DMK’s Suganya, AIADMK’s Bhanumathi, Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Karthika, and CPI’s Lakshmanan. Here, out of 51 nominations reviewed, 22 were accepted, and 29 were disqualified for failing to meet the required conditions.
The final list of candidates for both seats will be confirmed after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations. Candidates who have been validated can withdraw their names within the stipulated time set by the Election Commission.
With candidates from the ruling party and the two major Dravidian parties, along with Naam Tamilar Katchi and leftist factions, the by-elections are expected to witness significant campaigning.
