Marib, September 17 (Udaipur Kiran) : Houthi rebels have announced that they successfully shot down an armed reconnaissance drone belonging to Saudi Arabia in the northeastern province of Marib, Yemen. The claim was made by Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sari during a statement aired on the Houthi-operated Al-Masirah TV on Wednesday evening.
Sari stated that the drone was targeted while flying over Marib and was brought down using appropriate weaponry. Earlier that day, the Houthis had also claimed to have downed a Saudi F-15 fighter jet, asserting that over 450 aerial attacks had been launched by Saudi forces on various districts in recent days.
According to Sari, the Houthi forces used locally manufactured surface-to-air missiles to intercept the Saudi fighter jet, which had entered Yemeni airspace over Mocha in western Taiz. He noted that the jets had taken off from the Khamis Mushait airbase in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
The Houthi rebels have gained significant territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, recently capturing the strategic port city of Mocha on September 10, followed by the seizure of Mayyun Island located in the Bab al-Mandab strait, a crucial maritime route linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
The conflict in Yemen began in late 2014 when Houthi rebels took control of the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of northern Yemen. In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
