Mumbai, October 21 (Udaipur Kiran): Renowned veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, one of Indian cinema’s most beloved comic talents, passed away on Monday evening at the age of 84. According to reports, Asrani had been unwell for the past few days and was admitted to Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, where he breathed his last on Monday evening.

With a film career spanning over five decades, Asrani was among the longest-serving and most celebrated comic actors in Indian cinema. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he honed his acting skills before making his Bollywood debut in the mid-1960s.

While he initially appeared in serious and supporting roles, his exceptional comic timing soon made him a household name. By the 1970s and 1980s, Asrani had become one of the most prominent faces of Hindi cinema, often portraying endearing, bumbling clerks, assistants, or light-hearted side characters.

His unmatched expressions and humor earned him widespread admiration from audiences and filmmakers alike. Among his most memorable performances were his roles in “Sholay” — where he played the iconic, Hitler-inspired jailer — and “Chupke Chupke”, both considered classics of Indian cinema.

Apart from Hindi films, Asrani also worked extensively in Gujarati and Rajasthani cinema and directed a few films in Hindi and Gujarati as well. Over the years, he shared screen space with legendary actors like Mahmood, Rajesh Khanna, and later Govinda, leaving audiences in splits with his impeccable timing.

Beyond comedy, Asrani also displayed his dramatic depth in films such as “Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar” and “Chala Murari Hero Banne”, proving his versatility as a performer.

His passing marks the end of an era for Indian cinema — one defined by genuine humor, warmth, and timeless performances that continue to resonate with generations of moviegoers.
