Two NSCN(K) Cadres Killed in Arunachal Encounter

Itanagar, May 13: The NSCN (K) faction, led by Ang Mai, has reported the deaths of two of its senior cadres following an alleged shooting by security personnel in the Doimukh Nala area under the Miao Circle of Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh.

In a statement, the NSCN (K) claimed that the incident occurred on Monday night while its members of the ‘Pangsau Pass Command Group’ were engaged in activities aimed at fostering peace in the region.

According to the organization, its cadres were also involved in efforts to “reopen the Stilwell International Highway” for the benefit of local residents when they were reportedly subjected to “intense and unprovoked gunfire” from security forces.

The deceased have been identified as self-styled Lieutenant Colonel Umkong from Nayang village in the Tangshang area and self-styled Sergeant Enu from Chithok village in the Leenong area.

Describing the incident as “tragic and deeply disturbing,” the NSCN (K) stated that these deaths represent an “irreparable loss” for the families and comrades of the deceased, reflecting the “continuous suffering and sacrifices endured by the Naga people.”

The organization condemned the incident as an “irresponsible and provocative act,” alleging that the shooting occurred despite its purported commitment to maintaining peace and restraint.

The NSCN (K) further claimed that such incidents could destabilize the “fragile peace and mutual understanding” that has been maintained over time, warning that the use of force would deepen distrust and weaken efforts towards political dialogue.

The group has also demanded clarification from authorities on whether the alleged action was taken under the directives of the Indian government or was carried out independently by security forces.

It urged measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, reiterating that lasting peace can only be achieved through “mutual respect, responsible conduct, and unwavering commitment to dialogue.”

Meanwhile, reports indicate that weapons and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site. There are also claims that NSCN (K) militants have been pressuring villagers for extortion payments.

On Monday, security forces launched a major search operation in the area, which reportedly led to a fierce confrontation between security personnel and militants following heavy gunfire from the latter.

Security forces retaliated, resulting in the encounter.
