Shimla, December 31: Himachal Pradesh’s capital, Shimla, is brimming with tourists eager to ring in the New Year. The Ridge and Mall Road are teeming with visitors, as thousands of tourist vehicles head to the hill station daily. This influx has not only brought vibrancy to the city’s key attractions but has also led to significant traffic congestion. Luxury buses of HRTC and the Tourism Corporation, as well as the Kalka-Shimla toy train, are running at full capacity. The festive fervor is expected to continue into the first week of January, with most hotels hosting special arrangements for the celebrations.

Nearby Tourist Spots Draw Crowds
Popular destinations around Shimla, such as Kufri, Fagu, and Narkanda, are also witnessing a surge in tourists, thanks to recent snowfall. The snow-covered landscapes have drawn large numbers of visitors eager to enjoy winter sports and scenic beauty.
Traffic Challenges Amid Tourist Rush
The daily arrival of thousands of tourist vehicles has created traffic bottlenecks on major routes. The Kalka-Shimla National Highway, particularly the stretch from Sankat Mochan to the old bus stand in Shimla, is experiencing severe jams. Vehicles are taking up to two hours to cover a mere five-kilometer stretch. Additional police forces have been deployed to manage the traffic, with efforts underway to streamline vehicular movement.
Hotels at Full Occupancy
Hotel bookings have skyrocketed, with many establishments reporting 100% occupancy. Last-minute bookings are proving to be a challenge for visitors. Hotels and restaurants are organizing special New Year’s Eve events, including live music, dance shows, cultural performances, and exclusive dinner packages, to entertain guests.
Gajendra Singh Thakur, President of the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants, said, “This year’s snowfall has significantly boosted tourist interest. Special arrangements for New Year celebrations have been made, and the excitement is expected to last through the first week of January.”
Parking and Law Enforcement Arrangements
To accommodate the heavy tourist turnout, the administration has arranged additional parking facilities at Chauda Maidan, as existing parking spaces in the city are fully occupied.
Shimla police have stepped up security measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration. The city has been divided into five sectors, with 350 police personnel deployed across key tourist spots and crowded areas. Authorities have urged tourists to maintain peace and adhere to regulations.
