Tel Aviv/Gaza – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed that a precision airstrike conducted on May 13 in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis resulted in the death of senior Hamas commander Muhammad Sinwar, a key figure in the militant group’s military wing.
According to IDF statements, the strike targeted a complex underground Hamas tunnel network and command center situated beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis. The strike, described as highly coordinated, involved over 50 precision-guided bombs dropped within 30 seconds. The IDF has maintained that no damage was caused to the hospital itself, emphasizing the surgical accuracy of the operation.
Other High-Ranking Hamas Figures Also Eliminated
In addition to Muhammad Sinwar, the Israeli airstrike also killed Muhammad Shabana, the commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade, and Mahdi Qawara, head of the southern Khan Younis Battalion. These eliminations mark a significant blow to Hamas’s operational leadership in the southern Gaza Strip.
Muhammad Sinwar was the brother of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’s overall leader in Gaza, who has been on Israel’s most-wanted list since the October 7 attacks that triggered the ongoing conflict. With Sinwar’s confirmed death, the IDF is signaling progress in dismantling the militant organization’s command structure.
Defense Minister Issues Stern Warning
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a strongly worded statement following the announcement. “It’s now official—the murderer Muhammad Sinwar has been sent to the gates of hell to join his brother,” Katz said. He further warned Hamas leadership, stating, “Hamas commander Izz al-Din Haddad in Gaza City, Khalil al-Hayya, and their associates abroad should be ready—you are next in line.”
