Coimbatore, August 3: Tamil Nadu Minister K.G. Arun Raj announced on Sunday that the state is at the forefront of ‘posthumous organ donation’ in India, contributing nearly one-third of the total organ donations in the country. He emphasized that the government will not show leniency towards hospitals or organizations that disrupt the transplantation system.
Speaking after the ‘Life After Life’ organ donor award ceremony in Coimbatore, Arun Raj expressed that the inauguration of the ‘Wall of Honor’ dedicated to organ donors was an emotional experience. He stated that organ donors exemplify the highest form of humanity by giving others a chance to live even after their death.
The minister reflected on personal losses experienced by his family, making the occasion particularly poignant for him. The ‘Wall of Honor’ was established to honor donors whose organs have saved or transformed the lives of patients awaiting transplants.
Addressing concerns related to the organ transplantation system, Arun Raj noted that procedures have been tightened following incidents of kidney trafficking. He assured that the government has reviewed and streamlined the process to enhance organ donation and transplantation without compromising transparency or safety measures.
He clarified that reducing procedural barriers should not be interpreted as relaxing scrutiny. The minister warned that strict action will be taken against any hospital, institution, or organization found involved in irregularities related to organ donation or transplantation.
Arun Raj reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining public trust in the transplantation program, especially as it largely depends on the willingness of grieving families to consent to organ donation. He expressed pride that Tamil Nadu accounts for nearly one-third of the total organ donations in the country and remains a national leader in posthumous organ donation.
He acknowledged the contributions of donor families, stating that their decisions—often made in moments of deep sorrow—give critically ill patients a new lease on life. The ‘Life After Life’ program aimed to honor organ donors and their families while raising awareness about the importance of organ donation and its life-saving potential.
