Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced the setting-up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the mysterious death of student leader Anis Khan at his Amta home in Howrah district early Saturday.
Banerjee told reporters at Nabanna that the chief secretary and the DGP will head the SIT, which is expected to submit a report on the death of the student leader in a fortnight from now. The SIT will also have the police officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“ An SIT would be set up to investigate the death of student leader Anis Khan. The chief secretary and the director general of the criminal investigation department will be part of the SIT. It will submit its report within 15 days,” said Banerjee. ” Every death is unfortunate.
Anis was a good man. He was in touch with us and had even helped us during the election. Whoever is responsible for this will be caught and punished under law. I don’t condone such acts. No one will be spared,” the chief minister said and assured the probe will be impartial.
Earlier the bereaved family members and their neighbours accused police of negligence in investigating the crime, and demanded a CBI probe into the murder of 27-year-old former student of the Aliah University. A separate report said that senior police officials on Monday made several attempts to talk to the bereaved family members, but there was no response as the door was not opened from inside.
Four unidentified people allegedly murdered Anis Khan, a student leader of the Indian Secular Front, in his Howrah residence at the wee hours on Saturday. One of the accused was allegedly in police uniform, the bereaved family members alleged. Anis Khan was a former student of Aliah University and a prominent face in the protests against National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendmendt Act.
