Rome, May 10: World number one Jannik Sinner has made a powerful start at the Italian Open, defeating Sebastian Ofner in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to secure his place in the third round.
Sinner showcased his exceptional skills in front of a home crowd, dominating the match with only five unforced errors in the first set, leaving no chance for his opponent to mount a comeback. He broke serve early with a delicate drop shot, taking full control of the match, which lasted for one hour and 31 minutes.
With this victory, Sinner has extended his ATP Masters 1000 winning streak to 29 matches, tying him with Roger Federer for the third-longest streak in the series.
After the match, Sinner expressed his joy, stating, “I am very happy to be here. From day one, this tournament has been very special for me. As an Italian, you think about this tournament every year.”
In the third round, Sinner will face Alexei Popyrin, who advanced by defeating Jakub Mensik 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Having reached the finals in Rome last year, Sinner aims to become the first Italian player to win the tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976.
Sinner also has a chance to complete his career Golden Masters. If he wins the Italian Open, he will join Novak Djokovic as the only player to achieve this feat since the series began in 1990, having already won in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.
