Rawalpindi, December 22 (Udaipur Kiran) – Following the sentencing of Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison, security has been significantly increased across Rawalpindi. After the court verdict, nationwide protests were called by Imran Khan, prompting authorities to turn the entire city into a fortified zone.
According to reports, over 1,300 police officers and security personnel have been deployed throughout Rawalpindi to prevent possible protests by PTI supporters. Security checkpoints have been established at key locations including Liaqat Bagh, Fawara Chowk, Committee Chowk, and Faizabad. Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is held, is under strict surveillance with bunkers erected on all access routes. Security forces are equipped with riot control gear, including tear gas and rubber bullets, to manage any unrest. A three-day ban under Section 144 has been imposed on all political and religious gatherings to maintain law and order.
The Express Tribune reported that PTI supporters staged protests in Peshawar and other cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday against the conviction of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. Demonstrators gathered at Assembly Chowk in Peshawar, condemning the court’s decision and alleging political vendetta. Speakers claimed the judiciary failed to deliver impartial justice and vowed not to silence the party. They emphasized Imran Khan’s call for activists to take to the streets.
According to Dunya News, after being convicted in another Toshakhana case, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for nationwide protests. He told his lawyers that the verdict was expected and politically motivated. Khan has instructed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to prepare for a public movement. He urged the nation to stand up for its constitutional rights. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja stated that Imran Khan has clearly signalled resistance and will neither apologize under pressure nor compromise.
