Udaipur, July 13: A rare Laudankia Vine Snake (Ahaetulla laudankia) has been successfully photographed in the renowned wildlife-rich Ubeshwar region of Udaipur, marking a significant addition to the area’s biodiversity records.

The rare snake was documented on July 12, 2026, by wildlife photographer Rohit Dwivedi with guidance from Sharad Agrawal and Deepal Kalra. According to the team, the species was last recorded in Udaipur nearly three decades ago by wildlife expert Dr. Satish Sharma.
The Laudankia Vine Snake is a rare member of the vine snake group, with its scientific description formally published in 2019. The species is endemic to India and is believed to occur from the Eastern Ghats through central India to eastern Rajasthan. Due to very limited records in Rajasthan, it is considered a rare species in the state.
The snake is easily identified by its slender, vine-like body, chestnut-brown coloration, fine black speckles, and distinctive white patches beneath the head. Its elongated pointed snout, large eyes, and horizontal pupils further distinguish it from other snake species. Adult individuals generally measure between 80 centimetres and 1.5 metres in length.
A diurnal and arboreal species, the Laudankia Vine Snake inhabits dry deciduous forests, shrublands, rocky hill slopes, and other natural green habitats. Its diet primarily consists of lizards, geckos, small frogs, and small birds.
Although the species is mildly venomous and rear-fanged, experts note that its venom is mainly effective against small prey and is not considered dangerous to humans under normal circumstances. The snake is generally non-aggressive and prefers to remain concealed when threatened.
Speaking about the discovery, Rohit Dwivedi said wildlife photography is not only about capturing rare species but also about creating scientific records that help promote biodiversity conservation and public awareness. He added that the Ubeshwar region remains an important biodiversity hotspot in the Aravalli landscape, and the presence of such a rare species highlights its ecological significance.
Wildlife experts believe that authenticated photographic records like this play a vital role in biodiversity studies, conservation planning, and future scientific research. Once verified by experts, the sighting could become an important addition to the documented snake diversity of the Udaipur region.
