Kolkata, June 13: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Member of Parliament, has been summoned again by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police for questioning in a forged signature case. He is required to appear at the CID headquarters on June 14.
On June 11, Banerjee was interrogated by CID officials for over five hours. However, the investigation agency was not fully satisfied with his responses, prompting the need for further questioning.
Earlier, on June 11, Justice Kaushik Chanda of the Calcutta High Court had directed Banerjee to cooperate with the investigation by reaching the CID headquarters by 6 PM that day. The court remarked that he had previously ignored three summons and would not tolerate such repetition.
At the time of the court’s order, Banerjee was in New Delhi. Following the directive, he returned to Kolkata and arrived at the CID headquarters in Bhawani Bhavan at 5:55 PM, just five minutes before the deadline. He signed the visitor’s register and proceeded directly for questioning without speaking to the media.
The High Court has granted him interim relief from any form of coercive police action, including arrest, for 21 days while directing him to fully cooperate with the investigation. The court has also permitted the CID to conduct searches and raids if necessary.
All eyes are now on the CID’s next steps regarding the second round of questioning scheduled for June 14.
