Dhaka, March 26 – The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially confirmed that former West Indies cricketer Phil Simmons will continue as the head coach of the Bangladesh men’s national cricket team until the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. The announcement, made on Tuesday, reflects BCB’s confidence in Simmons’ leadership and vision for the future of Bangladesh cricket.

Extended Tenure Reflects Strong Start
Simmons, 61, was initially contracted with the BCB until the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, having taken over in October 2024. During his first tenure, Simmons guided Bangladesh in key series against South Africa, Afghanistan, and West Indies, where the team showed signs of solid development and strategic improvement.
In response to the extension, Simmons expressed enthusiasm and confidence about his long-term association with the team. “I am truly excited to have the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket for a longer period. This team has tremendous talent, and I believe together we can achieve something special,” he said.
Confidence in the Squad’s Talent and Commitment
Simmons praised the commitment and passion of the current players, noting that some of them have already impressed him with their skill and dedication. “Working with such passionate athletes is a constant source of inspiration. Their hunger for success is visible every day, and I am optimistic that we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights,” he added.
He also described his initial months with the team as “highly satisfying” and emphasized his eagerness to help players reach their full potential ahead of major tournaments, including the Champions Trophy and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
An Experienced Leader at the Helm
Phil Simmons brings a wealth of experience to the role. Between 1987 and 1999, he represented West Indies in 26 Test matches and 143 ODIs. His coaching journey began in 2004 with Zimbabwe, followed by a successful stint with Ireland from 2007 to 2015.
Simmons served as head coach of West Indies twice, most notably guiding the team to the ICC T20 World Cup title in 2016. He has also coached Afghanistan between 2018 and 2019, adding to his diverse international coaching portfolio.
His extended tenure is expected to bring stability, vision, and a performance-driven culture to Bangladesh cricket as the team prepares for future global challenges.
