Nepals Foreign Minister Clarifies PMs Controversial Cross-Border Occupation Statement

New Delhi, June 7: Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s recent statement regarding ‘cross-border occupation’ has sparked significant controversy. During a visit to India, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal addressed the issue, clarifying that his ministry had already issued an official statement on the matter. He spoke exclusively at the Nepalese embassy on Sunday.

When questioned about Prime Minister Shah’s remarks concerning Nepal’s occupation of Indian territory, Khanal stated, “My Foreign Ministry has already clarified this. The Prime Minister was responding to a question related to ‘cross-border occupation’ in Parliament, and we have already made our position clear on this.”

Khanal, who is on a three-day visit to India, commented on Shah’s anticipated visit to India, saying, “No date has been set yet. However, my visit suggests that there may be several high-level exchanges from both sides in the coming months.”

He emphasized the importance of Nepal-India relations, describing them as historically significant. “We have very good relations, which encompass tourism, our rivers, our water resources, our energy, and our families,” Khanal noted.

Earlier, during a press conference, Khanal characterized the relationship with India as beautiful and expressed a desire to strengthen ties with the neighboring country, particularly in the field of technology. “We view India with an open heart, clear vision, and a transparent agenda focused on Nepal’s economic transformation. When we look across the border, we see an emerging India, a nation that has fundamentally and beautifully redefined itself as a rapidly growing tech and economic powerhouse on the global stage. We want to connect with this deep hope and the continuously working India,” he added.

Khanal is in India at the invitation of Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. His visit comes in the wake of recent comments made by Prime Minister Balendra Shah regarding the border dispute between the two countries. On Saturday, he met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Indian counterpart, reaching agreements on various issues to further strengthen bilateral relations.
