North Koreas Firm Stance on Nuclear Program Ahead of China Visit

Seoul, June 7: North Korea has reiterated that its status as a nuclear power is entirely irreversible. In a statement released on Sunday, Kim Yo-jong, the sister of the country’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un, asserted that North Korea will neither abandon its position nor tolerate any threats against its nuclear status.

This statement comes just as Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to arrive in Pyongyang for a two-day visit on Monday. The remarks were published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

China is considered North Korea’s most significant political and economic ally, providing support amid international sanctions and diplomatic isolation.

In her statement, Kim Yo-jong also criticized the United States, dismissing claims made after a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing last month, where both leaders identified North Korea’s denuclearization as a shared goal. She labeled this as “dissemination of false information,” stating that the U.S. continues to live in outdated and impractical dreams.

North Korea has long maintained that its nuclear and ballistic missile programs are essential for national security. In 2023, it even enshrined its status as a nuclear power in its constitution. Following the collapse of denuclearization talks between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump in 2019, Pyongyang has accelerated its nuclear program.

According to North Korean state media, Kim Jong-un inspected a major weapons factory over the weekend and directed an increase in missile production capacity, emphasizing the need to ensure a sufficient supply of missiles.

Justifying the enhancement of its nuclear capabilities under the constitution, Kim described nuclear strength as the strongest logic in the struggle against those who “worship power,” asserting that North Korea will never compromise on its security and sovereignty.
