Mumbai, 20 November (Udaipur Kiran)। Cold conditions have intensified across Maharashtra, with Mumbai witnessing its chilliest morning in ten years. On Wednesday, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 16.2°C, the lowest November reading in the past decade. The cold wave has also affected air quality, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) into the ‘poor’ category.

According to the Meteorological Department, severe cold in northern India and the flow of icy winds from the north have caused a notable drop in temperatures across Maharashtra. Santa Cruz in Mumbai recorded 16.2°C, breaking the previous low of 16.3°C recorded in December 2016. This is the lowest temperature since December 2015.
Several regions including Konkan, North Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha have also reported a drop of 1–4 degrees Celsius. The weather department expects temperatures to fall further over the next couple of days. In the last two days, Nashik and Jalgaon have recorded a sharp decline in temperatures, while some areas in the state reported lows between 8°C and 9°C. Dhule recorded the coldest temperature of 6.1°C on Wednesday.
Ten-Year Temperature Trend in Mumbai
Looking at the last decade, Mumbai recorded minimum temperatures of 18.2°C in December 2015, 16.3°C in 2016, 18°C in 2017, 19.2°C in 2018, 20.5°C in 2019, 19.2°C in 2020, 19.8°C in 2021, 17°C in 2022, 19.7°C in 2023 and 16.5°C in 2024.
Pollution Concerns Rise
With the dip in temperatures, pollution levels have increased. Mumbai BJP Vice President Ravi Raja criticised the BMC, alleging that ward-level teams responsible for controlling pollution have failed to take effective action. He said breathing problems are rising among residents and demanded strict action against builders causing pollution.
Heavy Rain Alert in South India
The weather department has also warned of a fresh low-pressure formation over South India and nearby sea areas. Atmospheric conditions are turning severe, with predictions of light to moderate rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu from 19–25 November and alerts for very heavy rain in some regions. Heavy showers are expected across South India over the next two days.
