Kerala, May 14 (Udaipur Kiran) – Senior Congress leader V. D. Satheesan has been chosen as the new Chief Minister of Kerala following the massive victory of the Congress-led United Democratic Front in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Satheesan emerged ahead of senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal in the race for the top post. His selection comes after he led the opposition campaign that ended a decade-long Left government in the state.
Born in 1964 in Nettoor near Kochi, Satheesan began his political journey through the Kerala Students Union. A lawyer and social worker by profession, he has represented the Paravur Assembly constituency continuously since 2001.
Satheesan gained major prominence in 2021 when the Congress unexpectedly appointed him as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly. Despite lacking ministerial or administrative experience at the time, he became one of the strongest critics of the government led by Pinarayi Vijayan.
Over the past five years, he aggressively targeted the Left government on issues including corruption, the gold smuggling case and alleged financial mismanagement. His campaign style and aggressive opposition politics helped energise Congress workers across the state.
Political observers believe Satheesan’s leadership during the election campaign significantly strengthened his claim for the Chief Minister’s post. Support from key ally Indian Union Muslim League also played an important role in consolidating his position within the alliance.
Venugopal, considered one of the closest advisers to Rahul Gandhi, was seen as Satheesan’s biggest challenger because of his strong influence within the Congress high command in New Delhi.
Some leaders had raised concerns over Satheesan’s lack of ministerial experience and the open support he received from the Indian Union Muslim League. However, the Congress leadership ultimately backed Satheesan, citing his role in leading the party’s successful comeback in Kerala.
