New Delhi, 3 September (Kiran News): Indian middle-distance runner Parvez Khan has been handed a six-year ban after being found guilty of doping and missing three dope tests within a 12-month period.
Parvez Khan gained attention last year for his outstanding performances in American collegiate athletics. However, shortly after, his sample collected during the National Inter-State Championship in Panchkula (Haryana) tested positive for the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO). He was subsequently placed under provisional suspension.
What is EPO?
EPO is a drug that increases red blood cell production and is often misused in sports to enhance stamina. Medically, it is used for treating cancer patients.
Parvez Khan did not request testing of his B sample and accepted the results of his A sample. Normally, this violation carries a four-year ban. However, Khan also missed three dope tests—on 12 May, 10 July, and 5 December 2023—which independently brings an additional two-year ban.
The Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), in its 6 August ruling, stated, “The athlete’s sample tested positive for EPO, and he also violated another anti-doping rule within a 12-month period. Considering both violations, the ban is set for a total of six years.”
The ban will be effective from 28 August 2024, the date of his provisional suspension. All his competitive results after 27 June 2024 will be annulled, and he will be required to return any medals, points, and prizes won during this period.
