Med dept springs to action after Collector’s driver leaves swine flu ward

Udaipur : Authorities at the Pratapgarh district hospital sprang into action after being scorned by the Collector over mismanagement and improper upkeep of the swine flu ward here. Show cause notices have been served to three staff including the nursing superintendent while the swine flu ward has been shifted to a different room with better amenities.

According to sources, Pratapgarh collector’s driver Omkarlal was admitted to the swine flu ward few days ago. However, the patient was upset with the lack of facilities, poor ventilation and upkeep of the isolation ward. Rats ran up and down the room which looked more of a store room with equipments and furniture kept here and there. Within four hours of admission, the driver left the ward and went to Ahmedabad for treatment and when the district magistrate came to know of this incident, he rebuked the medical department authorities for the negligence. The collector also sent the SDM to visit the hospital on tuesday where the officer found the conditions even pathetic.

The administration came heavy on the medical department on its casual approach at a time when swine flu deaths are on a rise. So far two people have died of the disease while 9 positive cases have been reported and 54 samples have been sent for lab investigation from the hospital. After the collector’s intervention, the isolation ward has been shifted to another place, the female burn ward has been equipped with proper ventilation and mandatory instruments and the patients are being ensured utmost care, sources informed.
