Kolkata, July 25 — At least 13 people have died in lightning strike incidents across three districts of West Bengal in the past 24 hours. According to official reports, Bankura district recorded the highest number of casualties with seven deaths, followed by five in Purba Bardhaman and one in Paschim Medinipur.

Multiple Fatalities in Bankura
A senior official from the State Disaster Management Department said on Friday morning that a man named Jiaul Haque Molla was struck by lightning while working in a field in Khiri village under Kotulpur police station limits in Bankura district. Locals rushed him to the nearest hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
In the same district, another youth named Jiban Ghosh sustained serious burns in Patrasayer. He was initially taken to the Patrasayer Block Primary Health Centre, then shifted to Bishnupur Super Speciality Hospital, and finally to Bankura Sammilani Medical College, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Other victims in Bankura include Narayan Sabar in the Onda area, Sheikh Ismail in the Indas region, and Uttam Bhuiya in Jaipur—all of whom died due to lightning strikes. One other person was also injured in Indas.
Tragic Deaths Reported in Purba Bardhaman and Paschim Medinipur
In Purba Bardhaman, 60-year-old Sanatan Patra was working in a field in the Madhabdihi area when he was struck by lightning. Police confirmed that he was taken to the Alampur Primary Health Centre, where he was declared dead by doctors.
Another victim, 28-year-old Sanjay Hebraram from Bhedia village under Ausgram police station, also lost his life due to a lightning strike.
In Paschim Medinipur’s Chandrakona area, 42-year-old Lakshmikanta Pan died after being struck by lightning.
Weather Department Issues Warning
The Meteorological Department has issued a lightning and thunderstorm alert for districts in South Bengal, valid till July 27. The state administration has urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid venturing outdoors during bad weather.
