New Delhi, June 27: India’s rise on the global stage is attributed not only to its economic growth and geopolitical significance but also to its established credibility as a nation that respects international laws, adheres to bilateral agreements, and contributes constructively to global governance, according to a report by Gulf News.
The report highlights India’s participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions, compliance with multilateral institutions, climate commitments, development partnerships, and humanitarian assistance as evidence of its reliability.
Despite numerous challenges, India has consistently invested in regional stability, connectivity, and economic cooperation. It has played a crucial role in providing timely assistance during crises, from extending credit lines to developing countries to offering emergency aid during natural disasters.
For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, India faced significant domestic challenges while supplying medicines and vaccines to dozens of countries. Through initiatives like ‘Vaccine Maitri,’ India delivered millions of vaccine doses to nations across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific.
Similarly, India has been assisting Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, providing humanitarian aid to the Maldives and Mauritius, evacuating civilians from conflict zones, and supporting relief efforts following cyclones and earthquakes.
However, the report emphasizes that credibility should never be equated with passivity. International agreements are based on mutual obligations, and no responsible nation can be expected to uphold arrangements that are continuously undermined by hostility, violence, or threats to national security.
In this context, discussions regarding the suspension of certain bilateral agreements, including the Indus Water Treaty, should be understood. Despite decades of military conflicts and severe diplomatic tensions, India has adhered to this treaty for many years. Very few international agreements have endured such long periods under difficult circumstances.
Ongoing cross-border terrorism, which includes repeated attacks on civilians and persistent threats to security, undoubtedly affects the foundations of cooperation.
India’s stance has remained consistent: it seeks peace but emphasizes accountability. It supports dialogue and expects a genuine commitment to non-violence. The report concludes that while India respects agreements, it cannot ignore the ongoing threats to its citizens’ safety.
