Belfast (Udaipur Kiran), June 26: Ireland registered a historic 34-run victory over reigning T20 World Champions India in the first match of the two-match T20I series played in Belfast on Friday. This was Ireland’s first-ever win over India in T20 internationals.
After losing the toss, Ireland posted 182/9 in 20 overs. Lorcan Tucker played a crucial knock of 50 runs to guide the hosts to a competitive total.
In reply, India were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, falling short by 34 runs. Opener Abhishek Sharma was the top scorer for India with a quick 50 off 20 balls, while seven Indian batters failed to reach double figures. Young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi did not get an opportunity to make his debut.
Ireland wrapped up the match by dismissing India’s last wicket in the 19th over. Matthew Humphreys claimed the final wicket after Arshdeep Singh was caught by Tim Tector for 2 runs. Earlier, Humphreys had also dismissed Harshit Rana in the same over.
Before the collapse, India were 129/6 after 15 overs, needing 54 runs from the final five overs. Shivam Dube scored 25 runs off 14 balls before being dismissed, while Axar Patel contributed 15 runs from 16 deliveries.
The second and final T20I of the series will be played in Belfast on June 28.
