Guwahati, June 26: The famous Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam, will reopen for devotees on Friday following the conclusion of the annual Ambubachi Mela. The temple was closed for three days in observance of traditional religious beliefs associated with Goddess Kamakhya’s annual menstrual cycle.
The temple gates were shut at 9:08:42 PM on June 22, marking the start of the ‘Pravritti’ ritual. During this period, it is believed that Goddess Kamakhya remains in her annual menstrual state, leading to a complete restriction on devotees entering the sanctum sanctorum and the suspension of regular prayers.
On Friday morning, after the daily rituals, the temple will open its doors for devotees to seek blessings from the goddess. The temple administration has made extensive arrangements to accommodate millions of pilgrims, saints, and tourists arriving from across the country and abroad. Enhanced security, traffic management, lodging, and other essential services have been put in place.
The Ambubachi Mela is considered one of the most significant religious events related to the worship of Shakti. This festival symbolizes the fertility of Mother Earth and the power of creation. According to religious beliefs, during this time, Goddess Kamakhya, a symbol of feminine power and creativity, undergoes her annual menstrual cycle.
