Bhopal, April 16 (Udaipur Kiran): A heatwave alert has been issued in 16 districts of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, marking the first time this season that such a large number of districts have been placed under warning by the IMD Bhopal centre. Several parts of the state are expected to remain under the impact of hot winds for the next four days.
The districts likely to experience heatwave conditions include Ratlam, Jhabua, Dhar, Alirajpur, Barwani, Khargone, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Harda, Narmadapuram, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Mandla, and Balaghat. Earlier, heatwave-like conditions were already observed in Chhindwara, Pandhurna, and Mandla, following which alerts had been issued.
According to the weather department, the second half of April typically sees a sharp rise in temperatures, and this year is following a similar pattern. The first nine days of the month witnessed thunderstorms, rain, and hail, but temperatures began rising steadily from April 10 and are now intensifying further.
On Wednesday, the state recorded a significant spike in temperatures, with 25 cities reporting maximum temperatures of 40°C or above for the first time this season. Indore and Gwalior emerged as the hottest among major cities, both crossing the 40°C mark. Due to rising heat, school timings were revised in Burhanpur, Harda, and Ratlam.
Naugaon in Chhatarpur district was the hottest place in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 42.4°C. Khajuraho followed at 42.2°C, while Ratlam recorded 42°C. Narmadapuram reported 41.8°C, Satna 41.7°C, Mandla 41.6°C, Sidhi 41.2°C, and Shajapur 41.1°C. Tikamgarh, Dhar, Khargone, and Rewa recorded 41°C each. Umaria and Datia reported 40.8°C, while Sheopur, Damoh, and Raisen recorded 40.4°C. Guna recorded 40.3°C, Chhindwara, Malajkhand, and Betul reported 40.2°C, Khandwa 40.1°C, and Sagar recorded 40°C.
Among the major cities, Indore recorded 40°C, Gwalior 40.2°C, Bhopal 39.5°C, Ujjain 39.7°C, and Jabalpur 39.9°C.
The weather department also indicated that a new system is likely to become active from April 16, but it will remain weak and its impact will be limited to the western Himalayan region. At present, a trough system is active over the region.
