Kolkata, March 13 : Even before Holi celebrations kick in, West Bengal is already feeling the heat! The meteorological department has issued a heatwave alert for four districts in South Bengal, warning that temperatures could soar up to 5°C above normal over the weekend.
With Kolkata and other parts of South Bengal experiencing rapidly rising temperatures, the coming days are expected to be hotter than usual.
Which Areas Will Be the Hottest?
According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, these four districts are at high risk of heatwave conditions:
- Bankura
- Birbhum
- Paschim Medinipur
- Paschim Bardhaman
Meanwhile, Kolkata and other parts of South Bengal are also expected to experience a temperature spike of 3-4°C above normal by Sunday.
How Hot Is It Getting?
- Kolkata has already crossed 33°C, and with Holi around the corner, it’s expected to hit 35°C soon.
- Panagarh (Paschim Bardhaman) has already recorded 36°C, one of the highest in the region.
- Diamond Harbour & Bankura have also touched 35°C, while Kalaikunda & Purulia are experiencing similar conditions.
Over the next 4-5 days, the maximum temperature could rise by 4°C, and minimum temperatures could go up by 3°C, making nights uncomfortably warm as well.

South Bengal: Intense Heat & Dry Winds
- Hot winds from Odisha & Jharkhand are expected to fuel heatwave conditions in Bengal’s interior districts.
- The entire region will continue to sizzle, making it tough for outdoor activities.
North Bengal: A Brief Respite Before the Heat Hits
- While South Bengal is scorching, North Bengal still enjoys pleasant weather—for now.
- The IMD has predicted thunderstorms & light to moderate rainfall in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri.
- Wind speeds of 30-40 kmph are expected in these areas.
- But don’t get too comfortable—by Friday, the dry spell will return, and temperatures will start climbing here too.
