New Delhi, June 15: The conservation efforts for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB) have achieved another significant milestone. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, announced on Sunday that three new chicks have hatched as part of the conservation breeding program in recent days.
Sharing this achievement on social media, the minister noted that one of the newly hatched chicks emerged from an egg collected from the wild, while the other two were born from eggs provided in captivity.
With the birth of these new chicks, the total number of chicks born in the fourth year of the project has now reached 26. The total population of Great Indian Bustards at the conservation center has increased to 94. Officials expect more chicks to hatch this season.
Bhupender Yadav mentioned that out of the 26 chicks born this year, 18 were produced through artificial insemination, four through natural breeding, and four from eggs collected from the wild.
He also highlighted that instead of merely collecting eggs from the wild, three chicks have successfully hatched in the forest using a special ‘Jumpstart Intervention’ technique in Rajasthan. This process aims to enhance the genetic diversity of the birds and reduce threats from poachers.
The project entered its fourth year in March this year with the birth of two new chicks at the conservation breeding center in Rajasthan, one through natural breeding and the other via artificial insemination.
The minister congratulated the officials of the Rajasthan Forest Department and the entire team for this achievement, describing it as a significant success for the Great Indian Bustard conservation initiative.
