Google TV: The Future of Gemini-Powered Smart Displays?

Google may have just hinted at the future of smart displays, and the answer could lie in Google TV. At CES 2025, the company showcased how smart TVs running Android could evolve into next-generation smart displays, powered by Gemini AI and an ambient experience designed for modern homes.

The Evolution of Google’s Smart Displays

Google’s original vision for smart displays was seen in products like the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) and Nest Hub Max, followed by the Pixel Tablet with a dockable form factor. While the Pixel Tablet offered a more flexible, full Android experience, it remains unclear if Google will continue that product line.

Smart displays differ from smart speakers by providing ambient information at a glance—from time and weather to photos, security feeds, and video calls. Traditionally, they also offer presence-sensing capabilities, switching interfaces when users approach the screen.

Now, Google is demonstrating how Android-powered smart TVs can take over these smart display functions with an enhanced on-screen hub experience.

Google TV’s Ambient Mode: A Game-Changer?

At CES, Google introduced a new ambient mode for Google TV, featuring:
✔️ Widgets for weather, calendar, recent photos, and security cameras
✔️ Proximity-based UI switching, responding when users approach
✔️ Integrated Gemini AI for conversational assistance
✔️ Far-field microphones for hands-free voice commands

With TVs gaining built-in microphones and cameras, the smart display experience is moving toward larger screens with AI-powered interactivity.

Can Google TV Fully Replace Smart Displays?

While Google TV’s expansion into smart home features seems promising, there are challenges:
No touch controls – Unlike traditional smart displays, TVs are not inherently interactive
Size constraints – Unlike Nest Hubs or tablets, TVs can’t be placed everywhere in the home
Silent smart home controlVoice commands may replace taps, but some users prefer quick, silent interactions

A Multi-Device Smart Home Future

Rather than replacing smart displays entirely, Google TV could become the flagship smart hub, with tablets and smaller smart displays filling in the gaps. While TVs may be ideal for living rooms, there’s still demand for compact, affordable smart displays in bedrooms, kitchens, and offices.
