CRT-D Machine Installed at PIMS Udaipur for Heart Failure Patients: Treatment at Half the Cost of Private Hospitals

Heart Failure Patients

Udaipur: The Cardiology Department at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Udaipur, has restored the facility for treating heart failure patients. On Saturday, a 60-year-old woman was treated in the Cath Lab, where a CRT-D machine was implanted. The estimated cost of the procedure, including all expenses, is around 6.5 lakhs. The procedure was performed by Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain, Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia, CTVS Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat, and Non-invasive Cardiologist Dr. Umesh Swarnkar.

Dr. Mahesh Jain mentioned that treatment at PIMS Udaipur will cost 50% less than in private hospitals. This procedure will now be conducted regularly at the hospital. The process of implanting the CRT-D machine takes approximately two hours. Dr. Jain explained that the patient treated on Saturday was experiencing shortness of breath and swelling in the legs. After performing an angiography, it was found that there were no blockages, but the patient had heart failure. In cases of heart failure (LBBB), shortness of breath occurs, and the heart’s pumping ability becomes significantly weak. The CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) machine was the best treatment option in this case. This machine is an advanced version of a pacemaker, designed to resynchronize the heart’s function.

There can be several reasons for the weakening of the heart’s pumping ability, which can also be congenital. Infections can also weaken the heart’s pumping function, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath. The patient treated had complaints of shortness of breath and swelling in the legs. Some patients are at risk of their heart rhythm becoming irregular, which could lead to the heart stopping. To prevent this, a defibrillator, which delivers electric shocks to keep the heart functioning, is also implanted along with the CRT machine.
