Udaipur : In a remarkable medical achievement, Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, Udaipur successfully performed two complex pediatric hepato-biliary surgeries within a span of one week. Rare Diagnosis: Choledochal Cyst in Young Girls
According to Dr. Atul Mishra, Pediatric Surgeon at PIMS, the patients — two girls aged 7 and 8 from Sirohi and Dungarpur districts — were diagnosed with choledochal cysts, a rare congenital condition affecting the bile duct. This disease is seen in approximately one out of every 100,000 individuals.
The condition involves a balloon-like swelling in the bile duct due to a congenital malformation, which disrupts the normal flow of bile from the liver. Symptoms include persistent abdominal pain, jaundice, and vomiting. If untreated, the condition can lead to life-threatening complications such as liver damage or even cancer.
Complex Surgeries Conducted with Precision
Dr. Mishra explained that the surgical procedure is intricate, requiring the removal of the diseased bile duct followed by reconstructive surgery involving the liver and intestines to create a new bile passage. Each surgery took around five hours and involved highly specialized care.
The multidisciplinary team included anesthesiologists Dr. Tyagi, Dr. Pinu, Dr. Anil, Dr. Ketki, and Dr. Mahaveer, with critical support from nursing and technical staff members Arun, Harish, Ashok, and Zeeshan. Post-operative recovery was smooth, and both patients have now been discharged in good health.

Mr. Ashish Agarwal, Chairman of PIMS, shared that both surgeries were performed completely free of cost. He emphasized that over the past few years, the Pediatric Surgery Department at PIMS has successfully completed numerous complicated surgeries, thanks to the hospital’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and skilled medical professionals.
