Gill Acknowledges Need for Improvement After ODI Loss

Chandigarh, October 3 (Udaipur Kiran) : Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill expressed a mix of satisfaction and concern following his team’s 5-wicket defeat against West Indies in the third ODI on October 4, 2026. Despite securing the series with a 2-1 victory, Gill acknowledged that there are critical areas, particularly fielding and death bowling, that require immediate attention.

In the match, India set a formidable target, scoring 351 runs with Rohit Sharma contributing 92 runs and Ruturaj Gaikwad adding 57. A stellar unbeaten innings of 129 runs from KL Rahul bolstered the team’s total. However, it was not enough to secure a win, as West Indies captain Shai Hope delivered a stunning performance with an unbeaten 162 runs, leading his team to a historic chase.

During the post-match presentation, Gill remarked, “There were several positives, but there are definitely areas where we need to improve. I was happy with the score we set, but I felt the game was under our control. However, falling behind in the last few overs, they managed to snatch the game from us. If we had bowled our overs more effectively, it might have gone down to the wire.”

He also pointed out the challenges faced during death overs, stating, “Our clarity sometimes gets muddled between attacking and defending, especially in the death overs. In such matches, when the opposition has lost five or six wickets, it becomes tricky to set the right field. We need to be more decisive in our approach.”

Gill explained his decision to hold back wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s overs, citing uncertainty over Gurnoor Barar’s fitness due to cramps, which influenced their strategy. “We were unsure if he could return to bowl, so I wanted to keep some overs in reserve for the end,” he noted.

Reflecting on the early dismissal of Jayden Seales, Gill expressed disappointment but felt he couldn’t have done much differently. He concluded by emphasizing the need for improvement in the team’s fielding, highlighting that they dropped six or seven catches throughout the series, which is concerning ahead of the World Cup. “We need our fielding to be top-notch,” he stated.
