New Delhi, September 9 (Kiran News) — CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA candidate and Governor of Maharashtra, has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, securing a decisive victory over opposition candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy.

Out of a total of 781 eligible votes, 767 were cast in Tuesday’s election. Radhakrishnan received 452 first-preference votes, comfortably crossing the required majority of 391. Opposition-backed candidate Sudarshan Reddy secured 300 first-preference votes.
The election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned in July 2025 citing health reasons. Members of both Houses of Parliament formed the electoral college, comprising 245 Rajya Sabha and 543 Lok Sabha MPs. With seven seats currently vacant, the total number of eligible voters stood at 781.
Political Equations
The NDA, with 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 129 in the Rajya Sabha, had a clear numerical edge. Support from Andhra Pradesh’s YSR Congress Party (11 MPs) further bolstered Radhakrishnan’s chances. On the other hand, AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, extended its support to the opposition INDIA bloc’s candidate.
Meanwhile, parties such as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Biju Janata Dal (BJD), and Shiromani Akali Dal stayed away from the election. Two MPs — Sarbjit Singh Khalsa and Amritpal Singh of Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) — also boycotted the poll. Amritpal Singh, MP from Khadoor Sahib, is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam.
India’s 15th Vice President
With this victory, Radhakrishnan will take over as the Vice President of India, a role that also includes presiding over the Rajya Sabha. His election marks a continuation of the NDA’s stronghold in key constitutional posts.
