Kolkata, June 6: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made significant progress in the investigation of the murder of Chandranath Rath, a close aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The agency has arrested two suspects from Uttar Pradesh, specifically from Lucknow and Ballia.
According to CBI sources, Vikas Mishra was apprehended at a hotel on Ashok Marg in Lucknow, while the second suspect, Golu Singh, was captured in Ballia. Both are accused of fatally shooting Chandranath Rath on May 6.
Following the incident, Rath was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead by doctors. This murder has stirred considerable unrest in Bengal’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, another suspect, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, also known as Monu, surrendered to the gangster court in Ballia on Thursday. The court has remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. Local police report that Monu is a known criminal with 12 prior cases against him.
Given the seriousness of the case, the investigation was handed over to the CBI. After taking over from the Bengal police, the CBI filed a formal First Information Report (FIR) and accelerated their investigation.
To tackle this high-profile case, the CBI has formed a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a DIG from the Special Crime Unit based in Delhi. The agency is currently probing the entire conspiracy behind the murder, the suspects’ network, and potential motives for the crime.
CBI sources indicated that the arrested suspects will be presented in a special court in Kolkata after completing legal formalities. The agency is also conducting a thorough investigation into other aspects of the case and the roles of possible accomplices.
