New Delhi, August 26: India’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs (West) Sibi George represented the country at the National Day celebrations of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. The event also saw the presence of Uruguay’s Ambassador to India, Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, who shared insights in a special conversation following the ceremony.
Ambassador Amarilla announced that India is set to open an embassy in Uruguay, marking a significant milestone as both nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations. “We have high hopes for our relationship as we have just celebrated 75 years of diplomatic ties. This is a crucial turning point, especially with India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expected to attend the inauguration ceremony,” he stated.
He expressed eagerness to witness the warm relationship between President Yamandú Orsi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met last year in Brazil. “We hope our President will have the opportunity to visit India, and likewise, we look forward to Prime Minister Modi visiting Uruguay,” he added.
Ambassador Amarilla emphasized Prime Minister Modi’s significant contributions, highlighting his strong support for developing countries and efforts to strengthen ties between South America and India. He noted that trade between India and South America currently stands at approximately $50 billion, with expectations to reach nearly $100 billion by 2030.
Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s global leadership image, he remarked, “His image is very positive. He promotes the idea of the world as one family and has maintained a strong commitment to peace while addressing global challenges.”
On the rising military tensions between the United States and Iran, he stated, “Like India, Uruguay values peace. We do not support conflicts between nations and believe that differences should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means.”
He also acknowledged the importance of renewable energy resources, stating, “While oil remains a crucial energy resource, investing in renewables is essential to reduce dependency on resources that often lead to conflicts and contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful future.”
