Berlin, February 12: Bayern Munich has secured a place in the semifinals of the German Cup for the first time since 2020, defeating RB Leipzig 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Both goals were scored in the second half of the match.
Leipzig started the match aggressively, with Christoph Baumgartner scoring in the fourth minute, but the goal was ruled offside after a VAR review. Bayern gradually began to take control of the game, with Harry Kane forcing a difficult save from goalkeeper Marten Vandevoordt in the early minutes. In the 11th minute, Castello Lukeba cleared a potential goal off the line, providing relief for his team.
As the first half progressed, Bayern increased the pressure. Luis Diaz and Kane attempted to score from close range, but Leipzig’s defense held firm. A controversial moment occurred when Josip Stanisic brought down Antonio Nusa just outside the penalty box, but the referee did not award a penalty. The first half ended without any goals.
The second half remained balanced until a decisive moment in the 64th minute. Leipzig’s goalkeeper Vandevoordt slipped while challenging Stanisic, resulting in a penalty for Bayern. Kane calmly converted the penalty, giving his team the lead. Just three minutes later, Luis Diaz doubled the advantage in the 67th minute.
Bayern maintained full control of the game after that, denying Leipzig any chance of a comeback. With this victory, Bayern joins Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, and Freiburg in the semifinals, with the draw for the final four set to take place on February 22.
After the match, Leipzig’s chairman Oliver Mintzlaff congratulated Bayern, acknowledging that while his team performed well, more effort will be needed to defeat Bayern in the future.
