Srinagar, March 21 – Marking the start of the spring tourism season in Kashmir, Asia’s largest tulip garden located between the serene Dal Lake and the majestic Zabarwan Hills is set to open to the public on March 26. The garden spans 55 hectares and is blooming with an impressive 1.7 million tulip plants this year, offering a breathtaking spectacle of color and nature.
Grand Opening by J&K Chief Minister
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden will be inaugurated by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Preparations are in full swing to ensure a grand opening, with final touches being made to the sprawling garden. Officials are expecting a significant surge in visitors this season.
New Tulip Varieties and Floral Attractions
Assistant Floriculture Officer Asif Ahmed confirmed that two new tulip varieties have been added this year, bringing the total to 74. A fresh color scheme has also been introduced to enhance the visual experience for visitors.
In addition to tulips, the garden will also showcase a variety of spring blooms including hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamen. These additions are aimed at increasing the diversity and appeal of the floral display, making the garden more vibrant than ever.
From Humble Beginnings to Tourist Magnet
The garden, which began with just 50,000 tulip bulbs imported from the Netherlands, has grown into a premier tourist attraction in Kashmir. Last year, over 4.65 lakh domestic and international tourists visited the site, up from 3.65 lakh in 2023. Tourism officials are optimistic that 2025 will see even higher numbers.
With full bloom expected in late March and early April, this year’s tulip season is expected to attract travelers, photographers, and nature lovers from across the globe.
