Apple’s iPhone 16 display production have reportedly begun

The iPhone 16 series is set to be unveiled in September, and industry sources say mass production of display panels for Apple’s next iPhone 16 series has already begun ahead of the official launch.

Samsung Display and LG Display, Apple’s main display suppliers, have begun mass production of OLED panels for the new iPhone.

South Korea’s ETNews reports that Apple has ordered around 123 million display units, significantly more than the 90 million iPhone 16 shipments this year.

This approximately 30% overorder shows Apple’s optimistic outlook on the market performance of its new models.

Samsung Display is responsible for producing 80 million panels, while LG Display will supply 43 million panels. The increase in orders is expected to increase the performance of both companies in the second half of 2024.

Industry insiders believe that the launch of Apple Intelligence, the company’s new artificial intelligence feature, will significantly increase demand for the iPhone 16 series. This expectation led to larger than usual panel orders.

According to ETNews, LG Display will be the biggest beneficiary of this year’s production launch. The company’s share of Apple’s display orders has increased by about 10 million units compared to last year and now accounts for more than 30 percent of the total supply.

Notably, it is the first time that LG has met its production schedule on time, which could further strengthen its position with Apple.

Samsung’s total number of devices hasn’t increased dramatically, but the company is offering a higher percentage of displays on its high-end iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models. These premium panels account for around 60 percent of Samsung’s production for Apple and are expected to boost the South Korean display maker’s sales.

Despite the positive outlook from Samsung and LG, Chinese display maker BOE is reportedly facing approval challenges for the iPhone 16 series panels. As a result, BOE may not be involved in this generation’s production cycle.

e start of display production coincides with expectations that the iPhone 16 series will launch as planned in September, despite rumors of delays in Apple’s AI feature set.
