Government issues a ‘high risk’ warning for these Chrome users

Chrome users

India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an advisory for certain Google Chrome users. A cyber security company warns of several vulnerabilities in Chrome that expose your laptops/PCs to online attacks by cybercriminals.

What CERT-In advisory says

“Several vulnerabilities have been identified in Google Chrome on the desktop that could be exploited by a remote attacker to run arbitrary code on a target computer,” the report said.

According to CERT-In, the affected versions are:

• Google Chrome standard channel versions up to 127.0.6533.88/89 (for Windows, Mac) •
• Overview of stable versions of Google Chrome (Linux) up to version 127.0.6533.88.

The alert notes that these vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome on the desktop, applications fail to launch on Dawn, bounds are not read in WebTransport, and data validation is inadequate on Dawn. “An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities to trick a victim into viewing a specially crafted request,” the report said.

What should users do

Google has updated Chrome’s stable channel to 127.0.6533.88/89 on Windows, Mac and 127.0.6533.88 on Linux. The updates address the security vulnerabilities mentioned above. Users are advised to update the Google Chrome running on their devices to the latest version.

The update was released on July 30 and is available to most Chrome users. “Access to bug details and links may be limited until most users receive the patch update. “If a bug is found in a third-party library that other programs depend on but has not yet been fixed, it remains under our control,” Google said in a statement.
